Challenge
Pearson is a worldwide education company serving 75 million learners, Pearson set an objective to more than double that number, to 200 million, by 2025. An important part of this growth is in digital learning experience, and Pearson was facing difficulty in scaling and adjusting to its growing online audience. They needed an infrastructure platform that would be an option to scale quickly and deliver products to market faster.
Solution
"To transform our infrastructure, we had to think beyond simply enabling automated provisioning," says Chris Jackson, Director for Cloud Platforms & SRE at Pearson. “We understood we needed to build a platform that would allow Pearson developers to build and manage, and deploy applications in a totally different way.” The team picked Docker container technology and kubernetes orchestration “due to its adaptability, simplicity of the board and the manner in which it would improve our engineer productivity”.
After a year working at OpenShift, the platform team chose to build its own vanilla Kubernetes platform- and ask engineers to learn some kubernetes in order to utilize it. “This is not a magical platform,” says Ben Tyler, Principal Developer, B Platform Track. We're not claiming that you can just use it with your eyes closed. Developers need to do some learning, and we're going to do everything we can to make sure they have access to that knowledge. Before containers, creating a new service could take a couple of days if the developers understood Puppet, or weeks if they didn't. On the new platform, it can take as few as 10 minutes. About 500 new services were built on the platform in the first 8 months.
